Mrs Doretta Lena Plueger 52 of 45 Ord Ave NE died Wednesday in an Iowa City hospital after eight months of illness. Funeral services set for 2 pm Saturday at St John American Lutheran with Rev L L Belk and Rev Robert Floy officiating. Burial at Resthaven Memory Gardens. Survived by son Earlin and daughter Myrna Wittkep of Le Mars and six grandchildren. Preceded by parents William and Lena Weber Pecks and one son.
Two Westmar college students were re-elected to Iowa Evangelical United Brethren Youth Fellowship roles at the winter conference in Westmar on December 2. Bob Groat of Cedar Rapids was elected to a second term as president, while Kalona freshman Curtis Cox was reappointed youth associate for the Iowa conference to visit local youth groups as a source leader.
Trinity council and Knights of Calembus near finishing a new Knights of Columbus hall north of the post office. Plumbers have completed heating air conditioning and rest rooms. interior painting done. Surplus equipment from the old convent donated. Final touches include tiling and kitchen cabinet work. The hall will be open to the public for private and community events and may host weddings funerals meetings and youth activities. The weather bureau forecasts two to four inches of snow by late tonight as temperatures fall from a springlike day. Northwesterly winds whip light snow with blowing and drifting flurries 15 to 30 mph. By Friday morning temperatures may drop 10 to 15 degrees below zero with continued cloudy, very cold conditions.
In Ireton Joyce E Bushby aged 18 and her month old daughter Jody Jane died after a car crash near Hawarden Tuesday. A joint service will be at St Paul Lutheran Ireton at 2 pm Friday with Rev Paul Fredericks officiating. Burial in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Also killed was James C Hoekstra 19 of Sheldon. Funeral for Hoekstra at 1 30 pm Friday at Christian Reformed Sheldon. Burial East Lawn Sheldon. Survivors include Louis and Mrs Hoekstra of Sheldon and four brothers and three sisters.
Governor elect Harold Hughes will attend a victory dinner at 7 pm Friday in the Koenig armory, hosted by Plymouth County Democratic Party. General chairman Wally Luedtke reports advance ticket sales promise full capacity. Toastmaster Jim McNally, with Cy Ortmann and Ben Carley as reception chairs, and hostesses Mrs. Chuck Wiley and Mrs. Ear Mir. A caravan arrival is planned though exact time is unsettled.
Sioux City man Richard G Runge paid a 14 dollar fine in mayor's court on Wednesday for carrying a loaded gun in a vehicle. Charge filed December 9 by Conservation Officer EF Newel.
Le Mars fire department answered a call to a fire 10 miles north on highway 33 Wednesday evening at 8 10. A railroad fare had set dry grass ablaze along the highway. No damage occurred and crews contained the blaze despite strong northwest winds.
Westmar college sophomore class officers presiding over Sophomore Weeks are John Eveland vice president Barbara Garriott treasurer Lynn Scheierman secretary and Bob Groat president. John from Muscatine Town is a premedical student son of Rev and Mrs J A Eveland. Barbara daughter of Mrs Helen M Garriott of Colorado Springs is a music major planning to teach after graduation. Lynn from Etratton Colo is a business education major with dreams of teaching. She is daughter of Mr and Mrs Herbert Scheierman. President Bob is a business administration major from Cedar Rapids.

Clara Ricker, aged 62, died January 3 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee after a lingering illness. Born September 18, 1880, in Marcus, she was the daughter of James and [unnamed] Ricker and later lived in Granville before moving to Marcus. Interment was at the parish cemetery with Nelson Funeral Home in charge. Surviving are her brother Elmer Ricker of Marcus and sister-in-law Mrs. Kate Ricker of Colorado Springs, with several nieces and nephews listed.
County Engineer Herb Floyd and Plymouth county officials asked the state highway commission in Ames to let the county take over State Road No 140 a gravel route between Kingsley and Remsen. They propose grading and temporary surfacing with some state funding, saying county standards would be cheaper than state standards possibly under $1 million. Commission chair Jo Stong cited money and law as issues and noted the resurfacing is not in the five year program.

Mr and Mrs Joe H Goergen announce the engagement of their daughter Germaine E Goergen RN of Sioux City to Joseph F O Donnell son of Mr and Mrs Joseph O Donnell Sr of Sioux City. The wedding date has not been announced.
