Community Notes From East LeGrand And Area

East LeGrand special correspondent reports visits as Mrs Mabel Rowlison and family called on the C E Richards home Friday evening. Mr and Mrs Glenn Mills and daughter hosted Sunday visitors at the Tenus Olson home. Loretta Humphrey and Virginia Nodland spent last Tuesday at the Tama county fair. Vancil Rowlison was absent from school early in the week after cutting his foot with a corn knife. Edwin Humphrey helps Arthur Thompson with baby beeves at Marshall county fair this week. Indian Village Farm Bureau women met with Miss Jenny Nelson at Mrs Glenn Mills home. Officers for the coming year are Mrs Reba Larson Chairman and Mrs Maude Davidson Publicity Chairman with Miss Nelson demonstrating cheese and fruit drinks.

Neighbors Share Visits Across Town Homes

Mrs L C Blodgett spent Tuesday at F I Hines home. Miss Irma Dobson visited Virginia Nodland Sunday. Mr and Mrs Lawrence Otte dined Monday at George Coffin home. Mr and Mrs Harry Gibson and son Leland were Sunday guests at Eugene Gibson’s home with family.

Death of Alva Dougherty in Marshalltown

Alva Dougherty died at 9 15 am at Leacon ness hospital from dropsy and complications after six weeks as a patient, ending a five year decline. Born December 10 1883 near Quarry he lived there most of his life, married Grace Willets in 1905 and had one infant daughter. Survived by five brothers and three sisters, funeral held at 10 30 am Wednesday from Town River Church of the Brethren, with burial in the church cemetery. Rev Guy Harvey officiated.

Vancouver Island Named for Prominent Navigator

George Vancouver, born 1758, joined the Royal Navy in 1777 aboard the Resolution under Captain James Cook. He advanced to commander in 1790 and led the Discovery to Nootka Sound in 1791, mapping the Pacific Northwest before dying in Petersham, England, as journals were readied for publication in 1795.

Nizhny Novgorod on the Volga was renamed Gorky by the Soviet government to honor Maxim Gorky born there. Officially the city is Gorky, though locals sometimes say Gorod Gorky to distinguish it from the village of Gorky near Moscow. The word gorod means city, with grad as an alternate spelling.
