LeGrand Limestone Co on the north side of the Iowa river recently let a large stripping contract, with Concrete Materials Co of Cedar Rapids the winning bidder. The quarry is fully lit for 24 hour work using Koerning Dumoptors to haul dirt to the dump pile. Project expected to last about two weeks and several worker trailer houses are scattered in town.

The Adairs Richards Weitzell families held their annual picnic at Riverview park in Marshalltown with about 75 attendees. Harry Weitzell chaired a short business meeting and officers were elected C B Adair president Mabel Rowlison secretary treasurer. The oldest member was Phoebe McCarel and the youngest the grandson of A Hoskey. The next picnic is planned for August 1940 at Memorial cabin. Attendees included Mrs Fred Kerr, daughter of Sam Judge, and local W C T U members who attended Albion convention.

Three Country Doctors of Mayo Clinic Rise From Humble Roots
The Mayo family founded the Mayo Clinic starting with William Worrall Mayo and his sons Will and Charlie. From a small Rochester village, the clinic grew after Take care of 80,000 patients yearly and thousands of relatives visiting. The elder Mayo mortgaged his home to buy a $600 microscope, paying it off over a decade. Will and Charlie trained in Michigan and at clinics in Chicago and New York, sharing work with staff to treat hundreds of thousands, with fees from the rich and aid to the very poor. The fathers died in 1911 and 1910, while Will died last Friday. The country doctors left an enduring monument in the heart of the world.
