Former resident visits old home in LeGrand

An elderly LeGrand native, Otto Spence, visited his hometown with wife from Des Moines, viewing familiar buildings and recalling 1870s life. Distinguished Hoover party stops in LeGrand en route home

A touring party led by Mrs. Herbert Hoover halted briefly at the Allen Hoover home in LeGrand on their Lincoln Highway journey from California to Washington. The group included Mrs Hoover, her father Henry of Monterey, a young nephew, and a Filipino cook. Hoover directed his wife to Washington and to ship the Cadillac by freight, but she chose to travel the full route by land, planning to visit Waterloo next.

Lyceum Course Organizes Season Ticket Sale At Reporter

Community Lyceum club met at the Reporter alice to plan fall and winter attractions. Officers elected include Business Manager B. H. Béane, Assistant J. F. Rylander, Secretary P. G. McCracken, Treasurer Burton Minish. Season tickets priced 1.50 for adults and half for children 5 to 12. District committees named for Quaker Lane, Dillon, Dunbar, East Lincoln Highway, District North, Quarry, LeGrand, School, and an Advertising Committee with several members.

Visitors and townsfolk note in late fall poll tax due

Dr Newell and family of Marshalltown were visitors Monday evening at the Richards home. The town council notices all poll taxes due on or before the first Monday in November. J C Hollingsworth and wife with two grandchildren from Marshalltown were guests at the Mote home Saturday and Sunday. They plan to spend the winter in Aberdeen South Dakota.

Finish of fine roadway on Marion township hill

A near completion on a major road improvement north of Town river joins Marion and LeGrand townships with county aid and railroad work. Ditches and a large tile culvert have been added, the hill has been straightened, and visibility improved for oncoming autos. Future plans hint at widening and improved winter safety. Community notes mention Mrs Nimrod Ferguson visiting Marshalltown and Dillon Elevator Co offering Red River Early Ohio potatoes at 1.60 per bushel bagged in two bushel sacks.

Truck Shipping Surges as Rail Rates Rise

High freight costs in the west push livestock to markets by truck. Twenty percent of hogs to Omaha and thirty percent of sheep to St Joseph move by truck. 1921 truck shipments may exceed three million head. Railroads face losses and high labor costs, needing wage readjustment to prevent a permanent shift to auto truck lines.

Marvel Walls and Carl Rylander appointed to write high school items for LeGrand Reporter. New benches and desks installed. Basketball team had first workout. expect to meet last year’s standard.
