LeGrand residents anticipate more street lights with planned placements on Franklin Main and Julian streets as council moves to illuminate dark corners. Community events include an ice cream social at Quarry school house and a lively Brotherhood gathering at the Friends church with toasts and humor.

Spelling contest selects LeGrand township rep to county event

The initial LeGrand spelling contest at the high school last Friday named Marvin Nodland of East LeGrand as the best student, earning a chance to represent the township in Marshalltown for the county contest and possibly the state fair if he wins. Other contestants hailed from Rock Valley and Quarry. local civic notes follow with visits, health concerns, and business ads from the era.

Obituary of Dr William B Parker and Mary Scholfield

Obituary notices a LeGrand resident Dr William B Parker aged 86, veteran of the Ninth Iowa Infantry, organized gun squad at the soldiers home, died May 17 1916 after illness. Also notes death of Mary J Scholfield born 1840 near West Milton Ohio with long pioneer career in Iowa and Nebraska. Funeral at Friends church.

Dunbar district meeting moved to May 31 to June 2

Announcement from Dunbar Lutheran Church notes the Des Moines district meeting is postponed one day to avoid Decoration Day conflict. The event runs May 31 through June 2 with speakers and special music. The sermon next Sunday will be in English on A Condemnation and a Commandment by the Pastor Carlton Brethren Church Rev Henderson.

Realm of rest offered in quiet end at Friends church

A softly spoken death closed a frail life on the 17th at 4 15 p m at the home of her sister Mrs Hiram Hammond. The funeral will be held from the Friends church at 3 p m Friday with burial in the Friends cemetery. Also reported tuberculosis claimed the life Tuesday afternoon of Joseph Olear aged 28 at his parents Quarry home. Born April 20 1888 in Punxsutawney Pa he moved to Iowa as an infant and worked for the M and St L in Marshalltown until falling ill. Funeral services are set for Friday at 10 30 from the Quarry schoolhouse and burial in Fressant Bill cemetery.
