The Washington postmaster general added 47 savings depositaries to bring total to 176. Offices will open for deposits Monday June 12 as work starts on a new 1 million dollar temple for the Scottish Rite Masons in Washington. President Taft to lay the cornerstone in October.
Mrs Henry Lord Wheeler, wife of a Yale professor, was awarded a divorce for cruelty with alimony of 100000 dollars, the largest in Connecticut court history. Wheeler is the first Yale professor to obtain a divorce. The report notes other society items and a death: Rear Admiral William Gibson, retired, died at 72 in Brooklyn after a Civil War career.
Des Moines rumor says next week Great Western division superintendents in Chicago will arrange time cards for two new Chicago to St Paul and Kansas City trains to rival Rock Island service after its Kansas City to Twin Cities through line. The company will invest heavily this summer in roadbed upgrades and heavier steel from Des Moines to St Joe to support faster times and heavier equipment.
The seventy second annual meeting of the Congregational Conference of Iowa will be held in Webster City Tuesday through Thursday this week. About 400 delegates are expected, with each Congregational church in the state represented by its pastor and one elected delegate.
In New Market a special meeting approved contracting for electric street lights from Lee Electric Light Co. of Clarinda. A line will run from Clarinda to New Market, about eight to ten miles, and seventy five lights will be installed as soon as wiring is finished.
The Iowa City Chautauqua schedule for eight days starting Saturday afternoon August 13 lists speakers including Hon. William J. Bryan Senator W S Kenyon Judge George D Alden L B Wicersham and Bob Seeds.
The cornerstone of the new 16000 dollar Catholic church in Winterset was laid. Rev. James A. Troy led the ceremonies. Rt. Rev. J. O. Mavius of Dubuque blessed the stone as many Iowa Catholic divines attended.
Cedar Rapids reports the State Hahnneman Medical society elected Dr. S. A. Stadds of Sioux City as president, E. C. Lynn of Des Moines as vice-president, G. N. Himntoon of Des Moines as secretary, and M. A. Royal of West Liberty as treasurer. The next meeting is set for Des Moines.
Washington reports five Iowa officers will join Texas troops in a national guard detail. The cadre includes one major, one adjutant, two infantry company officers, and one medical corps major. They will report to San Antonio on May 27.
Ottumwa report says John Allen of Chillcothe was arrested by Sheriff W E Knox and will be arraigned immediately. He is alleged to have quarreled with Thomas McGrath, whose body was found in the tail race Monday afternoon. Allen is said to have been the last man with McGrath.
A special grand jury indicted Torval Anda on a first degree murder charge in the case against Rollo Swales. The state stated it is ready for immediate trial.

Fire destroyed the residence of farmer Dan Wilson near West Point on Port Madison. The Holtkamp house and barn also burned. The site is noted as the historical scene of the 1845 murder of John Miller and Henry Lessy by the Hodge brothers.
Waterloo reports three cities sought the next state convention of the Ancient Order of United Workmen. Du buque, Fort Dodge and Keokuk competed, but a large majority of delegates favored Dubuque, causing the other two cities to withdraw.
Sioux City prison inmate Harry Clark, jailed for shooting his mother-in-law, received five years and is in solitary confinement. Investigators found a carbon stick, two coils of insulated wire, and two fine saws hidden in a sandwich basket sent by his wife to the county jail.
Des Moines professor Laurence Laughlin of Chicago University, an authority on financial questions and member of the national monetary commission, will be a chief speaker at the Town Sisters Bankers association state convention in Mason City from June 14 to 15.
A blaze at Ottumwa Rock Island freight house destroyed the building with a $20000 loss. The fire, started by a spark from an engine, also consumed six box cars of freight on a side track. A switch engine dragged a car containing high explosives away just in time.
Journeymen plumbers from across the state elected M. J. McCauley of Des Moines as president, F. C. O. Carte of Marshalltown as secretary, and J. E. Stark of Des Moines as sergeant-at-arms at the Cedar Rapids gathering. A. L. Urick, state president of the Federation of Labor, attended the banquet.
The State Nurses association will convene its annual meeting in Waterloo on May 23 and 24. Miss Anna Goodwin, head of the University hospital in Iowa City, was elected as a delegate to the National Nurses convention in Boston on May 31.
Atlantic aviation head Pete Young leads Moissant International Aviation and will give an exhibition in the area this week. At 26, born in Anita Cass county, he has three years in the aviation business.

Belle Plaine boy 12 named George Welscarver died in hospital from injuries after wrestling with friends. He struck his head on the sidewalk during play and suffered a fatal accident in Cedar Rapids.
Governor Carroll travels to Waterloo to attend the state meeting of the A. O. U. W. lodge where he serves as an official and is expected to guide the organization in insurance matters.

Washington May 16 The Supreme Court held Standard Oil Company of New Jersey and nineteen subsidiaries to be a conspiracy in restraint of trade and monopolizing interstate commerce in violation of the Sherman act. Dissolution within six months. Justice Harlan dissented on a limit of the act’s application. The ruling narrows undue restraints while leaving other contracts untouched. President Taft and Cabinet to consider federal incorporation. The tobacco trust ruling awaited May 29.
After a night of revolvers clubs stones and missiles police were badly beaten a fire engine company attacked the mob with water streams and helped quell the disturbance to a considerable extent. Many women were among the rioters.
