Also reported are border security plots, polar exploration calls, a New York barbers strike, and various local incidents and crimes.
Missouri Supreme Court grants rehearing in ouster proceedings against the Standard Oil Company of Indiana and appoints John Montgomery of Sedalia to take testimony on the companys good faith in severing ties with trusts. Also reports drowning of saloonkeeper Edward Rackmar on the Ohio River near Evansville after a launch accident. Five Texas Pipe Line workers die in Collinsville lightning strike with two more seriously injured. Princeton wins varsity boat race at Cambridge Massachusetts by a quarter length, Harvard second, Pennsylvania third.
A boiler explosion beside United States ambassador Myron T. Herrick in Paris killed one worker and wounded three others. Fire damaged the ambassador’s fence but caused little further harm.
Former Shelby M. Cullom of TMinols ig ill and confined to his bed at his Washington residence. Some apprehension is felt about his condition as he suffers a severe cold.
Des Moines reports the Iowa Public Welfare League distributing large posters titled Warning to girls of the dangers they face and advice to evade white slavers. The notices urge avoiding loitering at depots and streets at night, not trusting strangers, not accepting food or drink, and seeking protection of a trusted friend or relative when traveling.
Waterloo adam Kiefer and William Smith of Hazelton, president and cashier of the Kiefer Savings Bank, were held to the grand jury under bonds of 1000 dollars each charged with accepting deposits after knowledge of the bank's insolvency, which closed about a month ago.
The Iowa State Dental Society elected officers led by President J A Hallett of Des Moines and Vice President E F Redman of Oskaloosa with Treasurer Frank Fourt of Fairfield. Des Moines chosen to host the 1914 convention in the first week of May.
Charles City report states G H Shannon surrendered at the sheriff's office after allegedly obtaining money by presenting a sight draft on Fairbanks Morse Co. at Marble Rock. He left town with the funds and now faces charges of obtaining money falsely.
The first case under the federal statute was tried in Fort Dodge as George North, Henry Christianson and M. C. Kemp were bound over to the federal grand jury for breaking into a Stort Lake railroad station.
Grundy Center dealer Philp Leibsohn sold the Wilson 830 acre farm near Dike to Charles Craig for 165 dollars per acre. Jake Tompkins sold his 280 acre farm two miles north of town to Else De Groote for 190 dollars per acre.
The thirty fifth annual Story County Veterans association reunion will be held in Cambridge on August 14 and 15. C. H. Dickey of Cambridge is named colonel and J. H. Woods adjutant for the event.
14 year old Hershel Houck of near Pleasanton was seriously injured by an accidental gun discharge. The shots tore the right arm leading to amputation.
In Mount Pleasant Henry county old soldiers plan to place bronze tablets bearing the names of every enlisted man from the county in the walls of the new courthouse under construction.
The fifty third regimental encampment is now assured for Charles City. The Commercial club has raised nearly 1000 dollars to defray expenses of fitting up the grounds for the event.
Estherville officials promise a pure water system within ninety days. The contract covers improvements including driving four wells on the west side of town. Estimated cost ranges from 1000 to 1200 dollars, funding the project to secure safer municipal water.
Frank Hantey former governor of Indiana is selected as the commencement orator for Morningside College graduation exercises. The choice highlights Hantey's public service and current role, with the ceremony slated for the college's annual commencement.
Aloysius Keyes, 45 formerly of Des Moines, is believed missing in Des Moines area. Polk County court holds a $25,000 fortune for his return. if he does not appear by June 26 he may be declared dead and the estate shared by his father Michael and brother Alphonse. The cousins Jas and Geo Hanley left over $250,000 in bequests from an Elgin Illinois auto crash. Keyes last worked as a pressman in Des Moines before moving to Washington seven years ago.
Towns Bankers association session concluded with elections. Chairman H Foskett of Shenandoah named. secretary Tewes Rohits of Minden. executive committee includes C E Price and Theodore Laskowski from Council Bluffs, John J Spindler also from Council Bluffs, F P Berger of Carroll, and I A French of Glenwood.
At a special Albia Business Men's meeting the plan to extend interurban lines to Buxton was endorsed. The build costs total 125000 with Albia residents subscribing 25000 and investments of 65090 already raised for the Hiteman and Hocking route.
Towas City's Captain W. R. Ray mound announced after inspecting the cadet regiment at the state university that each year five cadets who excel in military work and are honor students will be admitted to the regular army among second lieutenants without any further physical examination.
Cedar Rapids residents will vote on a proposal to raise $200,000 by tax to fund a connecting link with the Waterloo and Cedar Falls interurban. All taxpayers receive stock in the project proportional to their tax levy.
The Iowa State College has secured Snow King, a top priced Clydesdale breeding stallion. The animal, purchased by the national government for the Ames farm, arrived by express from R Copeland's breeding farm in Aberdeenshire Scotland, a few days ago.
The Greene Auto company has begun a city wide delivery system replacing separate wagon deliveries. Grocers previously operating individual wagons have sold their fleets and signed a one year contract with Greene Auto. Four deliveries will occur daily.
In Mason City a petition seeks to set aside the will of Daniel O Connor, valued at about 45000 dollars, alleging sons procured liquor to intoxicate their father and influence the deed making the will.
Five hundred members attended the thirty third regular session of the Ancient Order of United Workmen in Fort Dodge. A class of two hundred new members was initiated at the lodge gathering this week.
The Cedar Valley Racing Association will hold races in Waverly on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, June 10 to 12. The track is regarded as one of the best in the state and indications point to a large meeting with strong attendance and competition.
T B Buckley, injured in a fall downstairs five weeks ago in Lake Mills, was brought home from Mason City in a semi conscious state and remains in a fragile condition.
The Nevada Commercial Club plans to entertain the State Association of Beekeepers and state officers have contacted a large local apiary proprietor regarding hosting the annual meeting in July.
A prominent citizen, Thomas Bradield, was found dead in his big room with a magnetic device on the table beside him. He was a middle aged bachelor.
Des Moines based food and dairy department plans state support for cleanly run factories. Commissioner Barney will inspect Iowa plants and issue licenses to those proving sanitary operations. He notes many ketchup brands tested were low grade and dirty bottles. fifty prosecutions have occurred.
The Towa Anti-Saloon league launched a state campaign to educate the public for repealing the milict law. It plans cooperation with temperance groups to press a prohibitory amendment, while urging repeal of the mulct law which would permit saloons under statutory prohibition. Superintendent W C Barber urged action, saying constitutional prohibition is ideal but statutory law should stand now.
May order probes by the retrenchment and reform committee to determine how much unexpended funds the university agricultural college and board of control hold. Senate rejected a bill to revert unexpended appropriations on January 1 though similar measures passed both houses. Officials estimate about $100,000 in balances for each institution with the board of control holding a comparable amount.
The state highway commission now holds funds from the automobile tax law act. Eight percent of collections from January 1 to April 1, 1912 totals 24989.09 dollars, with a warrant issued to Herman Knapp, treasurer of Iowa State College at Ames. Auditor Bleakly will issue a warrant for April collections later, as a law requiring interdepartmental settlements every three days has not yet been published.
Special examiner BE B Henderdon of the Interstate Commerce Commission will visit Des Moines May 24 to hear rate case testimony for Marshall Oil Co against Chicago & Great Western and others. On May 27 he will hear testimony at Sioux City in Warfield Pratt Howell Co v Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul Railway.
An error in enrolling the Chase bill requiring railroad depots to have sanitary closets was corrected by the secretary of state and code commission. The word patrons was copied instead of persons. The original Chase amendment was found in the secretary’s office. Gov Clarke attorney general and supreme court members discussed the correction and agreed to fix it. The blue sky bill was also discussed. The retrenchment and reform committee told the executive council it may seek a time clock system at the state house, but no written order has been issued. Some bid inquiries suggest the clock order may be bluff rather than imminent.
The committee on retrenchment and reform last week produced campaign topics for the next election. Proposals include merit system at the state house and civil service protections, streamlined department reports, reverting unexpended appropriations to the treasury, open executive council meetings, reducing clerks and extra staff, and mandating open legislative committee meetings.
Iowa veterans seek transport to the Gettysburg battlefield reunion in July. With 250 applicants and 461 eligible veterans, the $10,000 state appropriation falls short by thirty applicants. Senators Thomas and White offer private aid and pledge future funding to cover all who wish to attend.
The retrenchment and reform committee discussed passes for the state fair with secretary Corey called before the panel. Some members favored restricting passes to exhibitors, fair directors, and reporters, excluding lawmakers, and a few urged discretionary passes for advertising value. Separately, ten of fifteen criminal cases in the May federal docket involve liquor sales without licenses, with other charges including postal violations. the Ft. Dodge, Des Moines and Southern Railroad receivership also looms as a major item for the term.
An information filed in police court accuses George A. Evans quartermaster of Company F Fifty fifth Iowa National Guard of breaking and entering. He allegedly stole state property valued around 1000 dollars, including revolvers rifles and field glasses, some taken from the rifle range north of the city. He is expected to be arraigned this week.
