New Railroad Safety Device Goes Into Operation

A new automatic speed control system on Chicago & Northwestern rails from Boone to Council Bluffs now operates, warning engineers with a yellow light and whistle as trains enter danger zones. If ignored, brakes engage automatically. a token system confirms both engineer and conductor know the device is active before motion. The system also restricts speed to 20 mph in danger zones and 70 mph when running clear, with a green light signaling safe speed. Nearby personal notices follow in a second portion of the page.

High School Exhibition And May Events At District

Helen Haynes visited the high school. Mrs Jo Kabnda of Greene spent the weekend here. The senior class play opens tonight at 8 with repeated showings tomorrow. admission 25 to 35 cents, reserved seats 40. Exhibition work nearly done, open to the public May 12 to 14. Baseball lost 8 to 3 to Ferguson last Friday afternoon. rematch played Tuesday night. Upcoming events include Baccalaureate May 16, grade operetta May 17, 8th grade commencement May 19, high school commencement May 20. Lectures, musical program, and Lyceum talks fill the schedule, with staff named for next year.

School Exhibit Promises Full Student Work Display

The annual public school exhibit will be held in the school gymnasium May 12 13 and 14. Work will be divided by grades and classes with pupil names visible for readers. The exhibit is free and all community members are urged to attend. One or more teachers will be present to explain the work as time permits. Open each day afternoon and evenings from 7 to 9. Fruit Prospects Bright for Abundant Local Harvest

The season shows strong fruit potential in Lona and surrounding areas with plum, cherry, and peach trees heavily bloomed and apples near bloom. If the blooms set fruit, households will face a surplus, while small fruits like strawberries and raspberries could add to the bounty. E. W. Hall announces his candidacy for re election as sheriff in the Reporter. He urges republican voters to support his record after one term. Hall, a Marshall county product, spent most of his life in the Marietta area before taking office amid unsettled conditions.

PTA May Meeting at High School Auditorium

The May meeting of the PTA will be held next Tuesday at 7:30 PM in the high school auditorium. It is the final meeting of the year with officer elections and a silver collection to defray expenses. Dr. W. C. Cleworth of Marshalltown will present an illustrated lecture on "town" after the session.

Cole Talks Farm Legislation and Industrial Approach

Cyrenus Cole, fifth district congressman, argues in a Cedar Rapids Republican letter that farm policy is an industrial rather than purely agricultural issue.
