Not the Gift of John Muir Suirwoods in California Debate

California numbers among its show places a redwood forest nicknamed Suirwoods in honor of John Muir who died recently. The forest is a national park owned by the United States, a detail many accounts miscredit to the late naturalist. The donor, William Kent of Kentfield, California, bought the forest in 1905 and presented it to the government, despite Roosevelt’s push for a Rent park name. Kent declined to have his name on the benefaction, and his timely act likely saved the giant trees from a public utility clearing.
