Widow Virginia Keen Dies After Illness at LeGrand

Mrs. Virginia B Keen widow of Ogier Keen died after a short illness at 2 30 am last Friday at her daughter’s home near LeGrand She had lived in LeGrand for 58 years born August 28 1851 in Baltimore MD she married Ogier Keen February 17 1875 and they moved to LeGrand She is survived by five of seven children George W Keen Charles Thomas Keen Margaret Hoover Irene Gibson and Elizabeth Hoover along with 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren Funeral services were held at 230 pm Sunday at the Friends church following a prayer service at the Hoover home conducted by Rev Taylor Guthrie with Rev G W Harvey of Marshalltown assisting Pallbearers were grandsons Howard Leland Keen Eugene Gibson Walter Dale Keen Donald Hoover Flower bearers included Mrs Ward Buchanan Mrs Howard Keen Mrs Leland Keen Mrs Eugene Gibson Miss Esther Hoover Miss Maxine Hoover and Lora Keen Burial was in Friends cemetery.

Town authorities and LeGrand Garden Club beautified the circular plot at the town square around the flagstaff and Joseph Davidson memorial boulder. Black dirt was dumped, granite boulders arranged, then Garden Club members planted flowers and perennials to create a summer display.

The school board met Tuesday with full membership. Senior class play Boots and Her Buddies earned about 75 dollars. Commencement is set for May 11 in the high school auditorium, with Baccalaureate at Friends church on Sunday at 8 pm. Eighth grade commencement and a play follow on May 17. Track team enters Guernsey meet Friday. senior class funds aid the team. Faculty dinner at Chester Tweet home. school exhibit moves to PTA next Tuesday and then to commencement night. Adkins spoke on Citizenship to grades five through eight. The senior class hosted a hob o party at Eugene Hoover’s Wednesday evening with costume prizes.

Youths Dry Convention Draws 4000 Attend In Marshalltown

Youths County Dry Convention at the Baptist Temple Marshalltown drew 4000 young attendees as Drake University student Harold Browne spoke on Prohibition. Rev Browne urged participation in the All Iowa Dry Convention in Des Moines on May 5 and 6 with 4 000 reservations already made. The parade begins 9 30 Saturday. the event will halt city activity for two hours to showcase youth commitment to dryness. Thirty local youths who attended expressed enthusiasm for the state convention and LeGrand’s potential representation.

The 4 H club met on January 29 at Lena Mary Erickson's home with good attendance. Members answered roll call with new plans for their rooms as Lois Gaunt gave a talk on wall finishes and Martha Garrett presented a picture study on the Souvenir of Italy. Mrs Knudson shared a talk on Winter Bouquets, Betty Gaunt read Master Musicians, and refreshments followed.

Death of Knudt Thompson in Dunbar

Knudt Thompson died Tuesday morning at his Dunbar home after months of poor health. Funeral services are planned at the Stavanger Friends meeting house and the full obituary will be printed next week in the Reporter.

Presbyterians Back Prohibition Amendment Support

The Fort Dodge Presbytery meeting at Rockwell City voted to endorse efforts to preserve the eighteenth amendment and urge anti liquor sentiment and voting. The 41 Presbyterian churches comprise the Presbytery as stated. The resolution notes that popular elections do not alter their convictions on alcoholic beverages and calls for active promotion of prohibition in the coming campaign.

Inn operator to appeal for 3.2 beer permit

Ruth Stewart operator of Lighthouse Inn ten miles north of Iowa City says she will appeal to the courts for a permit to sell 3.2 beer. The Lighthouse Inn in North Liberty is a popular student rendezvous but North Liberty council and mayor have decided to grant no beer permits.

LeGrand School District Calls Bids for 1953 34 Routes

The LeGrand Consolidated School District seeks bids on bus routes for 1953 34. East, west and north routes remain as now while the southwest route will include Johns Kaisand and Sam Iverson children and the current driver E J Larson route will be discontinued. Bids due by p m Tuesday May 16 with right to reject all bids.

LeGrand Parent-Teacher Meeting And Auction Sale

The LeGrand Parent-Teacher Association holds the final meeting of the year in the high school auditorium on May 9 with a 6:30 event in the gym. Coffee is provided and baskets with sandwiches and service are requested. High school displays run through commencement. 4-H Club plans a musical program. An auction sale of Dr and Mrs Mills household goods from Cylinder will be held at the LeGrand home of their daughter on Monday May 8 with bidders welcome.

Boots and Her Buddies Delights Local Audience

Senior class drama Boots and Her Buddies entertained Thursday and Friday at the school auditorium. Miss Edith Gaunt directed the eighteen cast members led by Marian Kouba and Kenneth Perry as Boots Boyd and her father. Kenneth Cutler and Stephen Sanders provided strong humor as Bill Thompson and Percival Manners, with Norman Dunham as Jed Harding. The cast also included Mildred Rasmussen as Mandy and Mary Perry, Loretta Humphrey, Ruth Guthrie, Jeannette Perisho, and others. Two glee club numbers opened the program and solo performances followed, including Robert White who later won praise for a Marshall county contest selection.
