Johnson Writes of Lively Times Over There in France

A Franco diary entry from Montgeroult on Easter morning 1918 describes a German offensive starting March 20. The writer recalls bombardment, evacuations, and a perilous lengthy retreat from Esmay-Hallow toward Montdidier Beauvais and Neuilly en Thelle, ending with arrival in Montgeroult.

Red Cross Fourth Plans July Celebration

A Monday meeting to discuss a safe and sanc t Fourth of July celebration drew a good crowd. P D Harvey was named chairman and C I Tweet secretary. Proceeds will go to the Red Cross. An executive committee and sub committees were formed with members Harry Brucklacher N O Keen J R Manship J F Rylander H C Herbert J R Wright and P E Shalt. Sub committees include Keen and Herbert speakers Music Rylander Band Manship refreshments and amusements Brucklacher chairman Finance Shalt and Wright Merry go round Tweet Grounds Harvey. Carey D M passes away at LeGrand after long illness

D M Carey died at his LeGrand home at 1 30 p m Thursday April 25 after arterial sclerosis confined him to bed since November 2 Born December 8 1848 in Carmel Indiana he came to Iowa in 1878 living in Bangor before moving to LeGrand He was married twice first to Jennie Lancaster and later to Addie Northam He leaves a daughter Mrs B E Beane one sister six grandchildren and a great grandson The funeral was held at the Friends church with Rev J R Wright conducting and burial in Friends cemetery
