Declamatory contest notes and town social updates

Que Special Correspondent Lylis Lunde reports on the Declamatory contest at Marshalltown last Friday night. Local families moved to a farm four miles west of town. A Box Social and program are planned at the School house next Friday night Marvels 17th. Election for school director was held Monday. R Caputo defeated J J Stewart by no votes. Mrs Henry Johnson and daughters Wilma and Maxine visited Anton Vokowa’s home. James Heryford and Jas Specht visited Hang Anderson’s home. Lunde family and Jerome Lunde visited Albert Rassmusun’s home near Montour. Mrs Peter Lunde celebrated her birthday with friends including Mesdames Snyder, Dougherty, Cutler, Rassmus, Johnson, Mertka, Caputo, and Misses Nellie Caputo Anna Caputo and Reba Johnson. Refreshments and social time observed.

A fragment from a March 1894 Harper’s Magazine edition, owned by a collector, reveals a thinly veiled critique of J. McNeill Whistler. The piece triggered Whistler’s ire, prompting publisher apology, recall of unsold copies, and later removal of the offending material. Du Maurier’s illustrations then caricatured Whistler as “Toe Sibley, the Ile Apprentice,” provoking London’s bibliographic and art circles.

Woman Passes Through Brick Wall on English Stage
