Harlan Lecture Pleases Local Audience On Town Names

Edgar R. Harlan of Des Moines presented a lecture at a fair on map study and Iowa nomenclature. He noted the rich material in town and county names and urged a writer to develop it into literature, donating his lecture to LeGrand without cost to the committee.

An Old Fashioned Mother to Be Staged in LeGrand

Mesars Fred Bennett and Thos Smith of Green Mountain arranged for a three act comedy drama An Old-Fashioned Mother to be staged at the LeGrand high school gym Friday evening. Church of the Brethren cast will perform the roles after presenting it at their church last Thursday. Admission is 50 and 35 cents, same as at the church, with many locals planning to travel to LeGrand for a second performance.

New Produce Station to Open Under LeGrand Firm

LeGrand prepares to welcome a new business as a produce station and farm implements firm sets up in the old hotel building. Mr. Tarvestad, known locally, arrives to outfit quarters for handling country produce and farm sundries with plans for a blacksmith shop in the background. Community members Burton Mionish and Ray Crouse join the venture, bringing Marble Rock and Dike connections as the new firm eyes broad business in the area.

Beaman High School visited LeGrand for a midweek basketball rematch the second meeting of the season. LeGrand prevailed 21 12 in the first period and 13 9 in the second for a 33 21 final as Beaman, hindered by a sprained ankle to Beane, played hard but could not overcome home court advantage.

A Farm Bureau gathering for LeGrand township members both men and women is set for Monday evening at 6:30 in the LeGrand Consolidated School Building. County Agent Buchanan and Home Demonstration Agent Mrs Gregg plan to outline and discuss their programs for the season.
