Messrs Krughel and Condon bought M L Beals blacksmith stock and sold it to Otis T Switzer who assumes full charge in both shops with Mr Myers as smith. Mrs P M Herbert takes over Mrs A W Arnolds millinery stock and rents H L Condon office to display her line, promising liberal patronage.
A Youth's Companion note argues that Mohammedanism is expanding its influence in India Africa Japan and Europe as Christians respond with renewed zeal. It cites Islamist political power in Turkey growing converts in Russia Germany and even London and Paris claiming Christianity loses ground. The Misses Gillam were at Marshalltown on Wednesday. Prof Read occupied the pulpit at the Fairview church Sunday. Rev A B Kendall conducted a funeral at Fairview church on Thursday. The boys rally day at Christian U S was largely attended by the students. The new gym floor has been occupied regularly for the past days. Gideon Garl’s entertainment at the college last Saturday evening was well attended. The first real battle on the new gymnasium floor will occur tonight a double header between Kendall's Cubs and the high school. Stand by your town newspaper.
During the Italy conflict between church and state a deputation of ladies urged King Victor Emmanuel to revoke the decree banishing teaching orders from their city. He replied that many local women were as qualified to educate as the departing teachers, saying mothers themselves are the best educators for their daughters.
John Gray, a well known farmer near Take City, bred quail at his home and saw their numbers grow to several hundred. Neighbors begin to follow, and soon farmers may own and feed their own quail for meals. Local birds thrive where native species perform best.
A dated February 17 letter from A R McDonald of Superior Wisconsin mentions not forgetting friends in Le Grand. He says everyone is well except Gibson who faced a dishonorable act two months ago, though the wording is garbled.
John Knudson a longtime resident near LeGrand died at his home after a prolonged illness from a cancerous tumor. Born September 26, 1837 in Skjolv Norway he emigrated to America in 1856. He leaves his wife Martha and six children Stephen Samuel Lindley Mary Jas Knudson Andrew. Funeral at his home at 1 pm with burial in Stavanger cemetery.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer recounts fairy godmothers surrounding a pink arch cradle. Six godmothers offer wealth pride selfishness beauty and love of dress while a sixth grants the power to reject gifts to ensure happiness, leaving the girl without wealth or vanity yet simply happy.
Lady Dorothy Nevill recalls King Louis of Bavaria helping a brave aide by gifting a portfolio containing 500 crowns. The officer reads a humorous work and asks for a second volume, receiving another similar portfolio with an inscription about the book's vigor and voluntary effort.

Mrs O E Howard and children from Montour visited Paxson and McCoy families. Cornelius Thompson Thorval Mae Thompson Minnie Anderson Gus Noland spent Sunday at Mrs Rachel Tweed's. D R Hoover went to Lamoille for James Pratt funeral. Pratt, once Hall Signal battery man, killed in a Grinnell railroad accident.
