Gordon Meltvedt and daughter Mildred narrowly escaped tragedy when a westbound freight flashed by at a crossing near LeGrand. The near miss occurred in bitter cold as they rode in a school hack and failed to see the train or hear warnings. Authorities criticized the crossing as a danger to the community.
LeGrand opens with a 30 13 win over State Center then 25 21 versus Liscomb in a tense second game. They beat St Anthony 27 14 in the semifinal and advance, while announcements praise the school spirit and planning for girls tournament support. Vernon Thompson and Lawrence Thurston on sick list. Clifford Hanlin ill, Ralph Piper to finish year at LeGrand as family moves.

In schedule order Rev. Taylor Guthrie leads Bible School at 10 a.m. with C. W. Johnson supervising lia. m. Junior Endeavor under Edna Johnson at 10 a.m. A 7:30 p.m. sermon titled The Sin of Omission follows. Wednesday prayer meeting planned at Loren Bigelow’s home with cordial welcome and a closing verse about journeys, storms, and reaching home.
The Christian Church hosts 10 a.m. Church School led by Supt. Mrs Mary Higinbotham and 11 a.m. Morning Worship on The Power of Life as God Planned It. Evening Services include 7:30 p.m. with The Scarlet Card and a 6:30 p.m. Christian Endeavor led by Mabel Gaunt. Wednesday prayer at 7 with business meeting at 8. Builders S. S. class social and luncheon followed by meeting chaired by Leona Leech.
Quarry Chapel announces Sunday School at 10 a.m. led by Roy Hartwell as superintendent. Church Service follows at 11 o'clock. Tuesday evening services at 7 30 p m. A cordial welcome to all.
The McDougal Construction company started work Wednesday on surfacing the approaches to the Iowa river bridge south of Belle Plaine for Benton county. The job involves eight or ten truckloads, possibly more after the Benton O.K. is passed, with at least a thirty mile haul over paved roads.
Twelve contestants from Toledo Gilman Dunbar and LeGrand performed at the preliminary state declamatory contest in the high school auditorium. Judges faced a tough task selecting winners as poor roads limited attendance. Gilman took two firsts LeGrand one third Toledo claimed all three seconds with Miss Jean Struble of Toledo delivering a pleasing vocal solo.
A gas stove leaked and exploded at the D. W. Richards home Saturday evening causing a near panic. Webb Richards tackled the blaze with a broom, driving the stove outside, while a canary inhaled fumes. This marks a second similar incident at the same residence.
Y P B members met at the Boswell home with 32 in attendance. They voted to write to Senators and House members urging support for Jones-Stalker bills to raise penalties under the Federal Prohibition Law.
