The Eastland capsized near Clark Street Bridge with about 2,500 aboard many from Western Electric company picnic families. Rescue efforts, investigations by federal and local authorities, and arrests followed as officials seek blame for the catastrophe.
Rescue teams rushed to the riverfront as the Hastland listed and capsized with many aboard. Officials say the legal limit was 2500, but eyewitnesses claim 3500 or more entered the Eastland. Firemen, police, and volunteers fought to reach passengers trapped in cabins as bodies were recovered along the bank and river.

Whitney refuses to lower salaries, claiming authority to pay 3 a day for stenographers. Executive council had reduced previously set salaries, but Whitney raised them. The audit board demands payroll reductions before any further salaries are allowed.
Jefferson officials announce Captain Head wins the contract to gravel two miles of the Lincoln highway between Jefferson and Grand Junction. Bids ranged to 95 cents per yard with 75 cents accepted. Estimated cost is $900 per mile for a four inch layer. The state highway commission plans a central eight foot wide gravel strip with layered coverage, creating a sixteen foot wide road. This marks the first county highway gravel contract in the state.
Le Mars authorities seek J. D. Knudson a young man said to spend lavishly here and to have passed worthless checks between five and twenty dollars to several businesspeople. He is reportedly the son of a wealthy Akron resident and may have defalcations to be remedied by his father. Knudson is said to have operated in other locations.
In Marshalltown the first case under the new law offering free surgical treatment for deformed children was heard in juvenile court. Judge Cummings committed four year old Henry L. Kassel of Melbourne to the hospital of the state university medical department at Iowa City for treatment of infantile paralysis.
