Rural mail service changes as LeGrand No 1 route is absorbed by Marshalltown Route 5. Grimes mans the new 48 mile motor route from Marshalltown post office starting July 1. Tra M Gaunt retires after long service since 1907 and a navy record noted, easing into pension.

Community Movies Fifth Straight LeGrand Run
Last Friday night marked the fifth consecutive movie in LeGrand with a near capacity crowd. The Eloosier Schoolmaster pleased attendees while mild weather allowed seersucker and shirt sleeves. First reel Krazy Kat provided humor and Miss Louise Johnson won a coin prize. The next film is Rainbow Valley with a dime admission.

Postmaster proposes route consolidation to cut costs
Hon Louis Murphy receives a letter dated June 21 1985 from Delmar D Latham LeGrand Iowa protesting the consolidation of service with route 5 Mar The carrier on route 1 LeGrand has 30 years service and could retire if separated. An inspector says route 5 Marshalltown will absorb route 1 LeGrand July 1 1935. No patrons lose service and annual costs drop over 1200. Route 5 will stop at LeGrand on outgoing trip and patrons keep current addresses. The plan aims to cut expenditures and warrants a thorough trial. Also note a Minneapolis trip by Mr and Mrs L T Hibbs and Mr and Mrs Wilbur Lawence last week for business and pleasure.

Death of Pearl Dougherty at 45 in Marshall County
Pearl E. Dougherty, 45, died at 7 a.m. Thursday at Deacon ness hospital of nephritis after a five week hospitalization. Born Sept 2, 1889 in LeGrand township, he lived on a farm east of Marshalltown most of his life. He married Katherine Duhachek Jan 12, 1911 at Toledo. Survived by widow, one son Ralph, grandson Dale, four brothers W L D B C R L D all east of Marshalltown, three sisters Mrs W A Cross, Mrs C E Bowles of Marshalltown, and Mrs L Bingman of Monmouth Ill. Member of Friends church at Quarry. Body at Estes Funeral home until funeral services at Town River Church of the Brethren four miles east of Marshalltown Sunday at 1 La.m. Rev Guy Harvey of Nazarene Church of Marshalltown officiated.

The LeGrand consolidated independent school district calls for bids on northeast and southwest bus routes. Northeast route extends to the county line north township line. Southwest route switches to cars when passable. Also bids for hauling 100 yards of road rock from north quarry to parking area east of the school. Deadline 7:30 p.m. July 18. Ancient spruce trunks found buried 25 000 years ago near Des Moines
Black spruce wood, 10 to 20 feet underground in Pearian loess soil northeast of Des Moines, preserved by moist dust. Scientists Dean Kay Behumil Shimek Paul Miller and Don Teal report a swampy site 12 miles from Des Moines where outwash plains and northward dust winds buried trees 25 000 to 50 000 years ago. Demonstration group named Louise Johnson Helen Louise Tostenson and Lora Keen. Activities included group singing talks on A 4-Hail on the Campus and Pickles, a bird sketch Blue Jay, and a piano solo by Myrna Johnson. Refreshments were served by the hostess and her mother. guests included Frances Goecke State Center Mrs. Russell Hibbs Rosalyn Haynes and Virginia Nodland.
