Death of Pope Benedict XV Ends A War Era

Rome, Jan 21 Pope Benedict XV died of pneumonia after a long illness. He had sought to end the war since his election in 1914 and faced delirium and weakness as physicians fought to sustain him. Cardinals and monks prayed at his bedside as the Vatican prepared last rites and his death brought a solemn scene in St Peter's Basilica.

Pope Benedict XV Assailed by War and Peace Efforts

Pope Benedict XV, rising to supreme head of the Catholic Church on September 6, 1914, faced World War I with repeated peace appeals. He urged negotiations after Belgium’s violation, the Lusitania sinking, and sought US mediation with Wilson. His most noted plea was on August 8, 1917. The pontiff also guided the Vatican through the peace conference and the Irish question, while his health deteriorated with lung infection beginning in January.

Reichsbank to be reorganized as stock company

Berlin January 21 preliminary action was taken by the finance committee of the imperial economic parliament to reorganize the reichsbank. A 12 member committee will draft a charter to increase independence from government oversight, convert the bank into a stock company capitalized at a billion marks, and require currency issuance backed by a gold reserve with government appointed president.
