Miss Ruth Lamer improves from lagrippe while Miss Florence Manship visits relatives in Marshalltown. For Rent a good house after March first. Mrs. Joe Prusha is slowly improving after weeks of illness. Charice Higinbotham and Glen Riddle were callers in Marshalltown. Mrs. J. J. Mote visited Marshalltown for dental work. Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Gaunt and others called in Marshalltown. Mrs. Phoebe McCarel returns home after ten days of nursing. Mrs. W. B. Parker visits daughter in Marshalltown. Mrs. E. E. Wade travels to Leighton for a few weeks. Aaron Shellenbarger to Marshalltown to stay with sister. Mrs. Mary F. DeLong visits daughter in Corwin O’Neal’s home. For Sale oats and clover seed from G. G. Bowen Searsboro. Chloris Richards visits Marshalltown to spend time with brother Glen. Meeker's Dry Cleaning agency opened by Chas. Harvey. Mrs. James Nelson immobilized by ankle broken on ice. Fern Lucile Dobson became bride of Vernal Hall of Garwin in a January 24 ceremony at her parents home with Rev. Henderson officiating. The couple plans to reside on Hall’s mother’s Carlton township farm after February 1. A reception followed with a three course dinner and gifts noted. both families praised locally.
Bids will be received until February 3, 1917, for township road work in LeGrand township for the season of 1917. Bids may be by quarter or halves of the township, to be divided by trustees for both parties’ best interest. Trustees reserve right to accept or reject any bid. Charles Johnson, Township Clerk.
Final examinations were held Thursday and Friday. Several students have been absent due to sickness. A "Test Printer of Udell's" reading opens exercises. A new commercial geography course is in the high school curriculum for 9th and 10th grades. Manual Training meets in the vacant house on the new school property where boys are making shelves and book-racks.
Curtis Hampton, longtime resident, died at his daughter E E Whaley's home two miles west of town from obstruction and rupture of the bowels. Born July 18, 1838 near Richmond Indiana he moved to Iowa at age six and lived in Lee County before moving to Ellsworth County Kansas then Marshalltown arriving June 9 1879. Survived by four children E E Whaley F A Hampton L D Hampton and L C Hampton, with fourteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Funeral held at Whaley home Thursday at 1 pm and burial in LeGrand Friends cemetery.
R L Pemberton sold 44 fancy Hampshire bred sons for 2200 dollars total at Marshall town on Wednesday, averaging 50 dollars with a top of 150 dollars for a two year old bred son. A spring gift brought 116 dollars, and he has sold about fifty males at private sale.
Corwin O Neal writes from Yards Lynda California describing travel from Iowa to Los Angeles and Yorba Linda to visit Cliff Tones family. He notes cool weather and blooming flowers despite desert views, mentions packing houses and potential cranberry and lemon crops in Iowa. The writer recalls a Whittier funeral and asks to forward last week’s paper to 218 South Washington Ave Whittier California until early March.
