Bulgaria Servia and Montenegro have issued an ultimatum to the Ottoman government, granting fourteen days to respond. Raymond Poincare has been elected president of France and will take office February 18. Emperor Nicholas has downgraded Grand Duke Michael to private status after his recent marriage. Indiana’s R H Simpson wins the Rhodes Scholarship, awarded jointly by Indiana Notre Dame DePauw and Earlham presidents every other year.
The Union church movement reports a debt free status for its large church built largely by nonchurchmen. About $20,000 has been raised in three years with significant support from people previously unaffiliated with any church. The diverse group includes Presbyterians Methodists Christians Baptists and Lutherans. The movement promotes humanity over creed and grows in numbers and strength.
Waterloo. Dr. Anna Longshosi is accused of performing a vial operation on Miss Rebecca Shade who died October 28. On the witness stand she denies all state allegations, stating in nine years of medical practice she never lost a case and never carried out a criminal operation.
Under postal regulations Cresco semi weekly newspapers will suspend. The Cresco Plait Dealer and the Howard County Times will discontinue their semi weekly editions on February 1st and issue a weekly.
Dennis O Connor, a Civil War veteran and prominent retired farmer in Oskaloosa, attempted suicide here by shooting himself in the head. The bullet narrowly missed the jugular vein. He is hospitalized with little hope for recovery, doctors report.
Tama man JJas. McKinney suffers a string of bad luck starting with a car breakdown six miles from town on Saturday. On Monday his wife gives birth to twins. On Tuesday a masked robber forces the cashier of his restaurant to surrender the cash register contents.
Keokuk city commissioners plan to issue bonds totaling 35000 dollars to cover grading and street improvements completed last summer. The bonds will carry interest at 4 1 4 percent.
Mason City reports that farmers in the county who join the Farmers Mutual Insurance association paid $1.90 per $1000 of coverage last year to sustain the company and settle all losses.
The Commercial club pledges a fine site for a state normal school at this location if the legislature orders one. The proposal emphasizes readiness to support the project and attract orderly state educational expansion.

Cedar Rapids police report George Gilchrist wanted in Hannibal Missouri for robbing a gambling house and in Tama Iowa for robbing a restaurant owner. Arrested here after Iowa Falls capture. Accomplice Mrs Jeannette Starbuck Gardiner of Cherokee also jailed. Alleged thefts total 265 dollars across Hannibal Tama and Cedar Rapids. Gilchrist and Starbuck allegedly spent Hannibal funds in St Louis on clothing and champagne.
Alderman Frank Patterson defends his six years on the council and his municipal work plastering brick and cement projects and cistern repairs in a local advertisement. The notice responds to wholesale accusations leveled by a weekly paper against the city council.
The president has announced nominations for Iowa postmasters including James J. Hutchinson Blanchard Thomas R. Shaw Colin Robert M. Willard Lost Nation E H Holdring Milford Clinton Scronse Prescott Richard M. Boyd Sanborn Chris Tensen Graettinger and John M. Ryan Eddyville all named for various towns.
The Marshalltown News reports Ralph Crowl, former resident of our city, won a $50 cash prize for the best short story in a University of Wisconsin student contest. Crowl serves as business manager of the Wisconsin Daily News, the university paper, and the prize was awarded in Madison, Wisconsin.
After a justice court hearing L. H. McPheeters was bound over to the grand jury on assault with intent to commit murder. The complaining witness is his son-in-law M. M. Wood, who alleges McPheeters tried to shoot him at Wood’s home.
Mason City Charles Hayden sues John Gund Brewing Co of Albert Lea claiming three cases of beer were sent weekly for five years and paid for but the transaction violated Iowa law, seeking a refund of 3400 dollars.
Joseph Tuffree, believed to be the oldest Elk in the world, died at his home in Marshalltown Iowa today after a week of illness. He would have turned 103 on February 10 if he had lived. Tuffree cast his first vote at 22 for Henry Clay and voted for Taft in November.
A $1,000,000 beet sugar plant is assured for Clear Lake next year as farmers agree to grow 2,500 acres of sugar beets. It is expected that 500 acres will be secured and construction will start in spring with operations ready by fall.
A freight shipment over the Creston Winter set and Des Moines road carried a car of coal to relieve a small coal mine at Macksburg. The return freight was five cars of sheep, shunned by George C. and John Thomas.
W. W. Cushman of Denison has secured an option on twenty five acres of land on the north side of Wall Lake from Hugo Westerman for 400 dollars an acre. Cushman intends to establish an up to date summer resort.
Eleven babies entered the Farmers Institute baby show at Oskaloosa. A peculiar feature was that every contestant had burning hair. Glen Hull won first prize.
Davenport Clio Klem a 13 year old boy was accidentally shot by companion Harry Carstensen aged 14 during a Sunday hunting trip. A shot from a gun tore a hole through the boy s leg and the incident is described in local reports.
The King’s Daughters report netting 120 in Red Cross seal sales during the holidays. A local motion picture house offers to boost the total by donating proceeds from an evening performance.
Calhoun county supervisors advertise for bids to erect a new courthouse valued at 125000 dollars. Bids will be opened February 11 as part of plans to expand county government facilities in Rockwell City.
Senator William S. Kenyon of Des Moines reelected for a six year term beginning March 4 1913 with 29 votes in the Senate and 62 in the House and a joint ballot majority for Kenyon. Gov George W Clarke proposes an arbitration board to settle industrial disputes. House appointments for committees were made by Speaker Cunningham after a four day recess with five key chairmanships held by rivals in the speakership race. Gerrit Blay retains judiciary chair, Jacob of Calhoun heads ways and means, and Larabee becomes chairman of the approprations committee.
Cedar Rapids filled Sinn of Williamsburg won the grand sweepstakes cup for the finest poultry exhibit. Prize winners also include R. W. Wales of Iowa City L. Rebsen of Emmetsburg George L. Marsh of Waterloo William F. Vol of Cedar Rapids and F C Gutnecht of Cedar Falls.
Sixteen tobacconists were fined five dollars each in police court for selling tobacco to boys under sixteen. Rev. H J Houghton, who organized the scout effort to gather evidence, was censured by Police Judge Sims for the methods used.
A 17 year old, Burlington resident, struck Pat Noble, 40, on the head with a stone during a quarrel at the Voelker home. Noble died from injuries. Noble had been staying at the Voelker residence and was drinking moments before the confrontation. The youth intervened to defend his mother during the dispute.
Eastbound Heck Island train No. 12 derailed 300 yards east of the depot. Coaches engine and tender left rails. Nine injured while Stanley Morgan of Altamount Missouri, a bridge foreman, died in the wreck.
Fire gutted the H. H. Peterson store in Maquoketa causing near total loss of stock. The building, owned by O. McCaffery, sustained only minor damage. Local merchants assess damages and await insurance assessments.
