Davis Hikins eldest son of the late Senator Stephen B Elkins was appointed to fill the vacant Senate seat caused by his fathers death. The term lasts three weeks until a successor is chosen by the legislature.

Newton Iowa January 10 coroner's jury verdict states Ole Cunningham a 50 year old black man died from bullet wounds fired by his son Harry. Preliminary hearing before Mayor C C Meredith and J W Guenen Des Moines hearing heard scuffle and shots but could not determine who fired. Ole had been drinking and dispute over retirement preceded the altercation.
