Community urged to buy locally to grow and prosper with a listing of local businesses and social activities. Local notices include church, school, library events, family updates, meetings, and a correction about ownership of a Midway Station, plus New Year gatherings and club activities.
The Christmas program was held in the high school auditorium with broad participation from all grades. Performances included songs, plays, and a "Visit to Santa Claus." The athletics section notes a basketball double header loss to Liscomb, with LeGrand boys 20 to 19 and girls 15 to 11.
Two weddings occur New Year Eve in Marshalltown and LeGrand. Miss Anna Tow wed Merle Frundle in a ring ceremony at the bride’s home with a pink white theme and four course dinner. Loren Rank and Blanche Bigelow wed at Friends parsonage with white satin-back crepe gown and rose bouquet. Both brides notable locals. families attend both ceremonies.
The bride, a LeGrand area native who grew up in Green Mountain and Carlton, graduated from Green Mountain school in 1927 and later moved to LeGrand. The groom, son of Mr and Mrs Oscar Rank of Carlton, graduated LeGrand High in 1926. They will reside on the Carlton farm as friends extend best wishes.
Grandparents parents and descendants gathered at the George Keen homestead southwest of LeGrand for New Year’s Day to renew ties. Twenty eight attendees answered roll call with a joyful report and a feast followed by a football game watch. Members present included Geo W Keen C T Keen Howard Keen H E Gibson C E Hoover Wm E Hoover N C Keen and G C Ogier. Chas G Johnson left for Long Beach California and will visit Ogden Utah before returning in late spring.
Friends Church has a morning program with Rev. Taylor Guthrie as pastor, Bible School led by O. W. Johnson, Junior Endeavor headed by Edna Johnson, worship service at 11 am, and an evening subject Applied with Mary Ellen Sanders leading the 6 30 gathering. A Wednesday prayer meeting is scheduled. The New Year's wish list includes health, wealth, strength, grace, patience, charity, and faith to overcome difficulties and fears.
The Christian Church announces services with Sunday School at 10 am led by Mrs Mary Higinbotham and morning worship at 11 am followed by communion. Evening services at 7:30 pm. Christian Endeavor at 6:30 pm led by Mabel Gaunt. Mission Circle met Thursday with Miss Della Richards leading devotions and Christmas reflections. Local notices include visits and background on Martin Huskey and family connected to the Christian Home in Omaha.
Notice states that electric light and power bills are mailed after readings and become due on receipt. Penalties apply for late payment at 10 percent for the first 10.00 and 2 percent on amounts over 10.00. A representative will be in LeGrand on or about the due date for collections. Visitors in Marshalltown may use the office as a rest room or to meet friends.
The Community Club hosted a New Year’s Day dinner at Community Hall drawing more than one hundred attendees. A cafeteria style meal preceded speeches by Reys Dykhuis Guthrie and attorney G A Mote from Marshalltown, with renewal of current officers and a closing chorus.
Two high school basketball games drew a large crowd at the school gym on New Year’s night. Alumni girls rallied to upset the HS team 21 to 19 after a close second half, while Ferguson Yellow Jackets defeated the Hampshires 34 to 23 in a fast paced contest. Referee Wells led the officiating. The program included a humorous chain gang moment and newlyweds introduced by Lloyd Omundson.
