In a December 2 1917 letter from France a soldier describes building a hospital near Paris and a Thanksgiving dinner in the city. He notes mail delays, travel by subway and streetcar, weather swings with snow, and a planned transfer to another château hospital. He remarks on rations, smoking among colleagues, and asks his father to send papers and Corwin’s address.
Navy Open for Enlistment in Iowa
Navy call for 1200 men by February 20th met with strong Iowa response as over 700 enlisted, leading larger districts. Death of Benj Outland Passes After Septicemia
Benjamin T. Outland died at 6 10 PM Monday at his nephew Howard Outland home two miles southeast of LeGrand from general septicemia following an old leg injury. A bachelor born in Rich Square North Carolina on August 4 1835 he lived in Muscatine before moving to LeGrand. Survived by nephew and niece Mrs B A Tow, funeral held 2 PM Wednesday at the Friends church with Rev J R Wright officiating. he was a long time member known for a sunny temperament and love of animals and children.

Glen McCarel has a severe cold causing absence from work. Mrs John Rasmus went to New Sharon to spend days with her daughter Mrs Jesse Olson. Dr and Mrs W W Newell and son Owen and Mrs H A Newell of Marshalltown spent New Years day at the B L Spangler home.
