Frost Hits Southern California Orange Crops

California reports heavy frost damaged 95 percent of orange crops across Los Angeles San Bernardino Riverside Ventura and Orange counties. Ann Altarena Hyde Marries Wayne Humphreys in Des Moines

Ann Altarena Hyde wed Wayne B. Humphreys of New Providence in Des Moines on November 8. Hyde has taught in LeGrand Consolidated School and led the Glen Club. Sixteen from LeGrand joined a Tuesday council bike trip to an east Marshalltown bridge where they met Leerint, prepared dinner, and later skated at Riverview Park before supper. The LeGrand troop held a Monday meeting in a vacant Sawyer building honoring Scoutmaster Clifford Tarvestad who leaves for Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.

Bitterly cold spell grips town with 20 below record

Old Boreas brings a brutal two weeks of winter as temperatures plunge to 20 below zero. Coal piles dwindle and preparations for ice harvest begin as river crews start work above the dam, with ice measured around 32 inches in the area, eight inches at LeGrand’s quarry pond.

A New Year’s social hosted by the Literary and Musical Club at Ma sonic Hall featured bio course oyster supper at eight followed by progressive rock. Uncle Cyrus Richards, of LeGrand, received a New Year card mailed from Pasadena, California. The cheerful note signed by “Mr. Cyrus Richards, Ancient Hack Driver” includes quirky lines about speed, success, and daily joys. The card ends with a playful greeting from Jimmie Pearson, heard in a corner remark.

Friends Church Services and New Year Social

The Friends Church reports Sunday School at 10 a m with Margaret Hoover as superintendent, morning service at 11, Junior Endeavor at 11 to noon led by Hattie Hibbs, and Senior Endeavor at 6 30 led by Frances Beane, evening service at 7 30. Wednesday prayer meeting. Endeavor business meeting Jan 5 with social hour. Last Sunday’s youth led service with Jessie Manship as chairman. Ralph Mills read scripture. talks by Carl Rylander and Marvin Nodland on New Year resolutions. Edith Harvey and Zella O Nea l presented a pantomime ushering in the New Year. Lawrence Hibbs spoke on regrets of the old year and Truman Dunham on possibilities of the new year. Mrs Arthur Roe sang. A U E social for the young people followed. The first course, sandwiches and salad. second course cocoa and cake. Oyster stew to be served by Gospel Team Thursday at 7 30. All members and families invited.

New Year Rally Casts Light on Church Activities

The Christian Church outlines a New Year program with 10:00 a.m. church school led by Anna Herbert, 11:00 a.m. morning worship and a quarterly communion. A Home Mission rally, letters from absent members read, and a 6:30 p.m. ENDEAVOR with Edith Gaunt. An 7:30 p.m. revival sermon is planned with possible ten day two week service starting New Year’s night. Parish men cut wood for church and Christmas Day program by children and youth featured a tree and treats.

Central Christians Triumph Over LeGrand in Des Moines Rivalry

Des Moines Central Christians, reigning state champions among independents, defeated LeGrand 46 to 32 at LeGrand High School. The game opened with LeGrand scoring early before Central Christians surged to a substantial lead by halftime. Despite LeGrand’s late rally, the Christians maintained control, earning praise for sportsmanship.
