Belle Plaine and Guthrie of Minnesota and George Eddy of this city were indicted and arrested on murder charges in the nine year old death of Mrs. Guthrie. The indictment alleges Guthrie hired Eddy to gather evidence for a divorce and later had the woman killed. A witness testified to seeing the men leaving the home the morning of the death. The case follows years of local mystery tied to other tragedies nearby and referred to the governor before the grand jury completed indictments.
Miller of Oregon was tried in Clinton Harrison and convicted of obtaining property under false pretenses. He received seven years at Fort Madison after buying a car from a Crawfordsville bank official with a worthless draft and later selling the machine, which has since been recovered.

She cites liquor as a major cause of pauperism, noting eighty cases helped with fifty six linked to parents or guardians with liquor habits. Foreign born citizens received little aid, Scandinavian cases being few and old or sickly. Early marriages and female household inefficiency are cited as other poverty contributors.
Dr H E Kirschnér of the state tuberculosis sanitarium Oakdale endorses a state hospital for incurables, a movement led by Dr W Hime of Dodge. He argues such a hospital would separate incurables from the community and other patients and would aid ongoing disease education and funding.

John McCullough of Franklin County near the town northeast of here has sold his eighty acre home place for 125 dollars per acre. He and his wife will retire from active life after living on the farm for forty-one years. The property was bought for 20 dollars an acre when the area was Taw prairie.
The infant daughter of Dr and Mrs FP Burk died after two days in an incubator hoping to save her life. The child was the smallest ever born in Johnson County weighing twenty one ounces.
Prominent educator Lambert, aged 80, dies in Cedar Falls Farriss. Father of a large family, he influenced education and professional life. Two sons served as professors at the State University, and a daughter teaches at the Teachers' State College.

Mrs Eliza J Cox a longtime Iowa City resident and one of the area s early pioneers has died at age 93 She lived here seven years and is survived by a son W J Kunyon of Kewanee Illinois.

Mrs J W Johnston aged ninety eight died in Ames after living in Iowa for more than sixty nine years. The funeral was held in Ames and the burial took place at Keokuk.
Delegates and visitors in large numbers attended the Seventeenth annual convention of the Retail Merchants association of Illinois in Cairo today. President C. G. Terrell opened the session with an invocation by Rev. J. J. Downey. Mayor George Parsons welcomed the merchants. W. H. Jossting of Alton, president of the state association, presided and gave the annual address. An illustrated lecture on Good Road Building by State Highway Engineer A. W. Johnson was planned for tonight, followed by a talk on Retailing of Merchandise Science by W. J. Pilkington of Des Moines tomorrow morning. The banquet is scheduled for tomorrow evening.
The third annual conference of church workers in state universities opens at the University of Wisconsin Madison with 21 institutions represented. Reports come from Michigan, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Nebraska, Missouri, Indiana, Oklahoma, Colorado and Chicago. Prof Shailer Matthews of Chicago will speak on The National Significance of the Religious Life of State Universities and tomorrow John R. Mott will address the gathering.

A Holland business owned by Fredericks and Limgelbach burned to the ground near Grundy Center on February 14. Loss set at 15,000 dollars and the post office within the building was also destroyed along with all contents.
Hix a Hedrick grocer was found not guilty by the Sigourney jury on charges of writing a blackmail note to Torrence Reynolda to extort money. The Feb 14 verdict clears Hix of the extortion accusation.
