Big Profit in Cows: Mount Pleasant and Independence Dairy

Sixty dairy cows at Mount Pleasant state hospital earned a net $11.63 per cow in November with a top monthly milking record of 1414 pounds. Seventy two cows at Independence earned $10.10 per cow. Total November milk at Mount Pleasant reached 5318 pounds valued at $1070.36 with $695.86 net after feed costs. Independence produced 47740 pounds with a $727.41 net. Labor costs are not charged. inmates assist in care as milk aids insane patients.

An express car attached to a Northwest erm train between Council Bluffs and Missouri Valley caught fire en route. It was hurriedly set out here and the fire extinguished. The depot platform was strewn with burned and damaged packages, apparently all Christmas gifts.

Logan W. Latta a farmer and livestock man on a Logan farm near the southern line reports selling both spring and fall wool clips totaling 25,433 pounds for 37,930 dollars. The fall clip came from 2,128 head and the spring clip from 1,424 head of sheep.

Will Pension Blind in Pelk County Des Moines

Pelk county will issue pensions to eligible blind residents during the first week in January. Dr. A. Arnold named examiner by the board of supervisors. Eligible applicants must be majority aged, five years state residency, one year county residency, and income not exceeding 300 dollars per year. Maximum pension is 150 dollars annually and applicants must show they are not inmates of a public institution.

Meyer Found Guilty in Van Meter Murder Case

Meyer, a young Van Meter farmer, was found guilty of second degree murder by a jury after 16 hours of deliberation. He stood trial for the killing of his wife on the Meyer farm near Van Meter on July 23. Mrs Ida Meyer, mother of the defendant, faces an indictment for murder in connection with the case and likely will not be tried until February.
