Des Moines youth confesses brutal Boone murder of uncle

Arthur Lumley an 18 year old Des Moines youth admitted to County Attorney F W Gance that he killed his wealthy uncle Thomas J Smalley at the Smalley farm near Boone. He said he acted for money to help his mother and father and poured kerosene on the bed before lighting it. Lumley hid the pocketbook and claimed he did not intend to kill but feared hanging.

Upper Iowa Conference to Meet at St Luke's Dubuque

The Upper Iowa conference of the Methodist Episcopal church will convene at St Luke's church in Dubuque on September 15 with Rev. Bishop Homer C Stuntz presiding. The session runs until September 20 and will attract about four to five hundred visitors, half of whom are clergy.

Large cattle shipment from Iowa to Chicago market

William Sprele, farmer and stock grower, loaded sixteen car loads of fat steers from this part of Iowa for shipment to Chicago. The consignment totaled over 200 head, averaging 950 pounds. Prices ranged with two hundred head bringing 8.90 and the remaining hundred at 8.10 per hundredweight.

Largest drainage project opens in Greene County district No 101

Jefferson launches the largest drainage project in the locality, district No 101 in Greene County. The 35 mile system will use 42 inch tiles weighing 3000 pounds each and cover about 10000 acres at an estimated total cost of 135000 dollars. Jefferson Cement Products secures the tile contract for 58555.40 dollars while R J Phelps of Davenport wins the open ditch contract at 11 74 cents per cubic yard.

Children sue saloon men for support damages

Three children James Virginia and John Heenan sue H Galinsky I Miller and Sidney Weir Harry Houghton for 12000 dollars claiming the saloon operators deprived them of their father's support. The mother Mrs Jennie Heenan says Jack Heenan was divorced in 1914 for drunkenness and the actions seek 2000 actual and 2000 exemplary against both bars. Death by Train near Rock Island Station

Council Bluffs L Felt manager of Western Steel and Iron was found dead near the Rock Island Passenger station. His body was cut in two after he went to the station to catch a Des Moines train. Delayed train led him to a cafe across tracks where he likely attempted to cross and was struck by the locomotive.

Des Moines bailiff Ben Bean studying court records finds eighteen inebriacy charges filed in March April and May 1915, versus forty two in the same period last year in the district court, supporting a dry town argument before District Judge Utterback.

Youth Killed By Train Near Manilla

M. D. McMahon 22 son of Mrs M D McMahon of Manilla died in a hospital after being struck by a train while driving from Aspinwall to Manilla. He was described as a well to do farmer. Surviving are his mother and three brothers.

City Council Awards Sewer Contract to Camery

At a recent meeting M. A. Camery of this city was awarded the sewer construction contract for 900 feet at a bid of 1.13 per foot totaling 920 dollars. Sidewalks were ordered along the golf grounds for three and a half blocks and west on Willow Street for a quarter mile.

Mason City officers seek H. L. Cole of Charnes City after his wife says he hitched the family horse and left home. She has sworn out a warrant for his arrest on wife desertion charges.

Fort Dodge report states Andrew Johnson aged 58 a driller in United States Gypsum company's mine was killed when a rock weighing one and a half tons collapsed. The long time miner with 33 years in the mines left a wife and three children.

Des Moines to be wartime horse shipping hub

Iowa farmers and horsemen stand to gain as Des Moines is selected to host a new war horse purchasing station for European powers. A contract is signed for a 2000 head stall facility with biweekly inspections by British, Italian, French and Russian officials. About 6000 horses monthly may be processed, delivering over a million dollars to local producers and employing at least 100 workers plus inspectors.

Rainsbargers Granted Pardon After Long Prison Term

Nathan and Frank Rainsbarger of Hardin county, jailed for the 1887 murder of Enoch Johnson and held at Anamosa, are pardoned by Governor Clarke. Frank served 27 years 5 months 10 days. Nathan 28 years 10 months 3 days. The pardon ends their terror era in the county. efforts began about ten years ago.

Army Salute Sparks Arrest in Waterloo

Thomas Palmer alleged deserter from Fort Snelling admitted leaving the army last September after saluting Officer Monhlis and Chief of Police Leighton. Palmer enlisted December 15, 1912, in Battery D Fifth Field Artillery, and was returned to Fort Des Moines after the incident.

Old Artesian Well Near Churdan Still Flows Free

About thirty years after M. B. Westervelt dug an artesian well on his Churdan area farm a newer well was drilled to 120 feet beside it. The second well has produced a continuous three inch stream without windmills engines or hand pumping, remaining one of the few good artesian wells in the area.

Life Term for Boy Murderer in Des Moines Case

Jericho horn accusation ends with a warning fine

Patrolman Helmuth accused Mrs. E B Frost of Philadelphia of using a Jericho horn while visiting Chelsea. Recorder Gaskill fined her five dollars as a warning for the antispeed disruption, urging muffling the horn to keep city quiet.
