California 75th Anniversary of Statehood Observance
A November 1849 narrative reflects on California’s 75th anniversary of statehood, recounting key moments from the gold rush, the admission as the 28th state, and the broader national and international interest. It traces the Overland Mail, Pacific communications, Mission history, Spanish and Russian presence, and pivotal events like the Guadalupe Hidalgo treaty and the Sutter's Mill gold discovery. The piece emphasizes California’s dramatic growth from a small post to San Francisco’s boomtown, and muses on providence guiding liberty and rights in American expansion.
