High Wages Offered in Oregon Ship Building Effort

Oregon shipyards face labor shortages as Secretary of State urges rapid expansion to meet wartime needs. Demand calls for 12,000 workers in Portland alone and 20,000 to 25,000 statewide by year end or early next year. Builders, officials, and eastern business leaders push recruitment from the West. The federal government assigns shipbuilding as a top patriotic duty to sustain Allied efforts, with training provided by yards, government, and state to place skilled labor in steel and wood ships at high wages.
