Krupp workers granted demands averting strike

Foreign reports from Essen say Krupp employees won all demands, with German military pressure aiding the end. Rev. Edward Kozlowski auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee archdiocese died in St Josephs hospital. George Fitch author of Peoria died at a Berkeley California sanitarium after failing to rally from an appendicitis operation. Fitch, born June 5 1877 at Galya UL, is noted among American humorists with Mark Twain, Bill Nye, George Ade and Finney Peter Dunne.

Two North Liberty Bank Robbers Sentenced in Iowa

Defendants William Robert Smith and Will C. Loomis, who confessed to the Warmers bank robbery at North Liberty on July 36, were sentenced to twenty years. Loomis, 26, to the Anamosa reformatory and Smith, 24, to Fort Madison penitentiary, all within 24 hours of return to Iowa City. Both waived examination and pleaded guilty. Loomis had given a full confession after arrest.

Man Found Slain in Barn Near Council Bluffs

John L. Rogers aged 24 was found with his throat cut in a hayloft of a rarely used barn. He had been dead about a day. Authorities call it murder though no motive is clear as cashing a Creston check was in his pockets. Bloodied fingerprints suggest dragging. A man named Kirt Wilson was taken into custody.

Saves Train From Wreck in Iowa Rail Incident

A section man saved Chicago Burlington and Quincy No. 6 from disaster by leaping onto the tracks and stopping the locomotive after a damaged section of track gave way just as the fast train passed. Roadbed repairs followed and the man is praised for bravery with Carnegie medal consideration. Also noted is Miss Martha Steele visiting Mount Ayr, boasting about 285000 miles of travel across land and sea since the year began.

Dynamite accident kills Hallard Sparrowgrove near Mallard

Victor Sparrowgrove was killed when dynamite caps in his lap exploded after he dropped a pocketknife while preparing to set off a charge under a stump south of English River. Mallard and L H Holscher were present and injured but survived as the blast tore away Sparrowgrove’s leg and grievously mutilated him. He lived about an hour, remained conscious to the end, and spoke freely before dying.

Robber Steals 339 From Iowa City Woman

An unknown thief entered the basement while Fred Sommer slept upstairs and Mrs. Sommer counted money at a table by an electric light. He crept up behind her. she fled shouting when seen. The robber took 339 from her purse, left 312, and escaped as the woman cried out in hysteria.

Roland Liveryman Killed in Des Moines Speed Way Crash

Dispatches from Ames report another death tied to Des Moines speedway events. Oss car Arentson, Roland livery stable proprietor, died when his car was struck by a Northwestern train about five miles south of Roland while returning from the races. Shot In Peculiar Manner Near Kilbourne

Mrs. John A. Craig of Kilbourne vicinity in Van Buren county was shot while crossing a bridge over Lick Creek. Her son Jay was shooting birds from the barn lot, and a stray bullet struck her arm. The incident occurred as she walked toward Kilbourne, yielding a surprising and painful event.
