Lightning Bolt Destroys Walnut Tree Near RK M Tweet Place
Last Thursday evening a fierce thunderstorm struck the north edge of town hitting a large walnut tree near the RK M Tweet place. The trunk split from base to crown, bark torn for 15 to 20 feet, leaving a six inch root hole. The tree, over fifty years old, stood two feet in diameter at the base and would have yielded valuable lumber.

Mary Ann dredge destroyed by lightning near Kalsem Heights
The Mary Ann dredge, long an eyesore in the old river bed near Kalsem Heights, was destroyed by lightning. The vessel had straightened the Iowa river years ago, a project many locals condemn as a crime. Original cost was about 50,600 dollars. Threshing continues as weather clears. Dr Frank Coffin notes the undrained road from town center to the county line is the worst seen from the Missouri line to Tama county.
