Newton Y M C A Boys Camp Brightens Carlton Township

The Newton Y M C A established its camp in Carlton township near the county line bridge, expanding to a permanent site with a dining hall built by twelve businessmen. Thirty six boys arrived for a week of camping, with later sessions for girls and additional boys, as well as the camp’s annual wind up by forty business men. The camp saw swimming, games, and a local victory over LeGrand’s ball team.

The Rising Tide of public debt shows no abatement as Harding warns about state and municipal borrowings. The Daily Bond Buyer data show 1922 as peak, with 1923 nearly as high, and June 1923 bond issues totaling 160.1 million. Each year after 1918 sees rising public spending and debt, lifting taxes and consumer prices nationwide.

Grain Yields Reported Across Several Farms

Yields include Eric Ferguson 604 bushels wheat from thirty acres about 20 bu an acre. Chas Carter 720 bushels oats from twelve acres about 60 bu per acre. Pearl Lowry 2272 bushels oats from 45 acres just over 50 bu per acre. Glen Lowry 1592 bushels oats from forty acres about 40 bu per acre. Jas Lowry 40 bu oats on a forgotten field.
