A couple recounts building their own small house in LeGrand town using stone walls and self effort. They explain choosing a local site, moving an old barn, and embracing a pioneer spirit over perfect design while highlighting family livability and the wish to provide a home.
Sherman Nursery and local representative noted. Edith Gaunt taught at Vancleve and spent the weekend with her Gaunt parents. Tama visitors included Mrs John Hynek and children, plus the Glidewell party traveling to Lee County Illinois. L J Harrison and Iona Howard visited, Lansing offered library books, Tom Evans called from Garwin area, Frank Smaha aided his ailing father Jos Smaha Sr. in Le Grand with care and family support.
Charles Munson aged 66 and district manager of Iowa Electric Light and Power died at 12:25 am Saturday in Deaconess hospital. Born August 14, 1873 near Aledo Illinois, Munson built a long career in utilities from horsecar operator to plant superintendent. He moved to Cedar Rapids in 1902 joining Iowa Railway and Light as master mechanic. Surviving are his widow Daisy Tapp, a brother, two sisters, and several nieces and nephews. He held Masonic and Rotary memberships and was active in the Marshalltown Methodist church. Masonic funeral services were held at First Methodist Church with burial in Riverside.
School events listed include district and county baseball, state music contest, and senior class play. Activities span April 5 to May 17 with exams, commencement, and end of term notes including no school on May 16 and 8th grade graduation.
The gown, rose hue blended with pearl, was crafted in England a century and a quarter ago for a fair young girl whose beauty shone at parties. It accompanied her through betrothal, then faded from memory as she rests in English soil. Now the silk garment crosses oceans again, gleaming with opal sheen, inviting a haunting wish for vanished joys and youth to return.

Twenty six members and guests of the Ladies Literary and Musical club met at the club rooms last Wednesday for an afternoon social hosted by Mesdames Chas Dunham Leland Keen Tom Keen Russell Rubenbauer Leonard Wines and others. Mrs Wines sang with piano accompaniment and Mrs J B Ramsey of Gilman reviewed three books. A two course luncheon in yellow and white was served and the next meeting set for April 10 with home economics focus inviting members to bring a favorite dish and recipe.
A friendly LeGrand Friends Church advertises services led by Pastor Wines with Sunday School at 10, Morning Worship at 11, Christian Endeavor at 6 45, and Evening service at 7 30. It urges giving as life’s real purpose and evidence of joy in generosity versus self-centered living.
The Christian Church announces a morning church school at 10 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. preaching service. Evening services are at 7 30 with Rev. Wiley Hinecker in charge and an invitation to all.
The Quarry Chapel announces Rev. L. T. Hibbs as pastor. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m. with Mrs. Jerome Lunde as superintendent. Services follow at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening prayer meeting is held.
Strand Lutheran in Dunbar lists Sunday activities with Sunday School at 10, morning worship at 11, and evening service at 7 30. Weekday events include Brotherhood Monday at 8 and Luther League Wednesday at unspecified time.
Four LeGrand high school girls under Miss Dorothy Turner prepared a one act play Joint Owners in Spain for the Town City Play Festival. The group performed at home on March 12 then Tama and Iowa City where judges praised their effort. The team Avis Kinney Dava Baumgardner Betty Peterson and Myrna Johnson earned a Superior rating in Class C with Myrna Johnson and Betty Peterson singled out for special note.
The Birthday Club gathered Monday night at Mattie Manship’s home for an April fool’s party. Members socialized and wrote a letter to Ollie Krughel, then shared lunch. Each member brought a sack with lunch and an April fool’s parcel, and all were blindfolded for the unwrapping amid much merriment. Glad to have Mattie back with us.

Announcement made Friday by B G Bur Reibsamen tax deputy in the county treasurer’s office of his candidacy for nomination on the Republican ticket for county auditor. He is son of Glen Reibsamen a former LeGrand resident and Marshalltown High School graduate who has eight years county office experience. He has supervised general ledgers and tax accounting, chaired Marshall County Young Republicans, and is active in Y M C A programs and a Boy Scout troop committee. He is married with a young daughter.
