State Center Sees No Federal Relief Needed

LeGrand Light System Rebuilt With New Poles And Transformers

Workmen rebuild the LeGrand lighting system in a multi phase project. About seventy new forty to fifty foot poles will be installed, old wiring replaced with heavier wire, and two transformers added to boost efficiency. A four man local crew joins expert linemen under foreman L. A. Seblicht and general superintendent Harry Leeman.

Beginning last Sunday Northwestern railroad made several changes and additions to its fast limited train service. The alterations impact small towns less, as the changes chiefly affect faster regional runs with minimal local disruption.

The W C T U met with Mrs. Mattie Pemberton as eleven members answered roll call. Guests from Dunbar Union and eight from our community attended. A devotional opened with Take My Life, readings from John, and a varied program of music readings and talks followed.

O W Johnson leads Morning Service on Sept 11 at Friends Church with Bible School and Gospel Service. The sermon recalls St John ending Jesus life with the seaside scene and the call to feed His lambs. Jesus asks for our help, not because He needs it, but because the loss is ours if we refuse, a threshold into lifelong service.

Christian Church Service and Mission Circle Meeting

The Christian Church held a 10 am church school led by Mary Higinbotham, a 11 am morning worship with communion, and no evening service. The Mission Circle met Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Anna Herbert. devotions by Mrs. J W Piper. the lesson on Negro education in the South by Mrs. Herbert, aided by several members. Mrs. Higinbotham reviewed Richard B. Harrison of Green Pastures. Four visitors joined the final discussion, and a social hour featured a light refreshment.

Death of Mrs George Hostetter in Quarry Neighborhood

Mrs Viola Ressler Hostetter wife of George Hostetter longtime Quarry resident died at home Sunday morning from a complication of diseases. Born April 14 1860 in Tipton County Indiana she moved with her parents to Keokuk County Iowa at age 1. She married George Hostetter March 24 1885 and lived near What Cheer before moving to Quarry in 1887. Survived by her husband two sisters Mrs H B Wright Eldora and Mrs Ellen Stebbins Marshalltown and a sister in law Mrs Maggie Ressler Des Moines. Funeral Tuesday at 2 pm Estes Funeral Home Quarry Chapel burial in Iowa River Church of the Brethren Cemetery Marshall County Iowa.

Rail taxes dwindle as railroads struggle to pay

Railroad taxes paid in Iowa last week amount to 739343.01 for the Milwaukee Road. Marshall county receives 9834.52 to support state, county governments, highways, and schools. Executives warn earnings declines may end tax payments if no fix.

The Cemetery Association met at Mrs. Rosa Beebout's home on Friday. Officers chosen: Mrs. Ray Duncan, President. Mrs. Will Dunham, Vice President. Mrs. Rosa Beebout, Secretary. Mrs. W.
