Bruton Freed After Preliminary Hearing In Fatal Shooting
Justice of the Peace Fred Kinmonth ruled there was insufficient evidence to bind Will Bruton over to district court on first degree manslaughter charges in the slaying of his son in law Franklin Vernon Cranfill. Bruton testified the fatal shot was accidental, supported by his wife Estelle Bruton and daughter Mrs Cranfill who is Cranfill’s widow. The testimony described Cranfill’s forceful entry, a scuffle, and the gun going off as Bruton tried to restrain him.

Delay Seen in Lawton Water Project Vote Follows Clash
Lawton council faces a stormy session over water project plans with Councilman Williamson pushing a motion now blocked by a single member. The debate centers on Hendrick’s supplemental proposal and the role of Black and Veatch versus Hendrick in a potential engineering contract tied to a bond issue, with budgeted preliminary fees and possible per diem services. The mayor cited a 1944 Health Service report to argue against Hendrick, warning against personal favoritism and urging cost-conscious engineering choices.
