New Gun Probes Earth's Core At 30000 MPH
California Institute of Technology researchers unveil a two stage gun to fire plastic projectiles at 30000 mph to simulate core pressures up to 3.6 million atmospheres and temperatures near 7000 F. Dr. Thomas Ahrens says results may reveal whether silicon or sulfur dominates Earth's core and illuminate planetary interiors. The 106 foot gun uses hydrogen compression to launch tungsten tipped projectiles in a 20 foot tube.
