MacArthur outlines occupation aims in Japan editorial interview

General MacArthur declares Potsdam terms strictly enforced with demobilization of the Japanese army by October 18 and abolition of the gendarmerie after discharge. He says most arms will be destroyed, occupation will last years, and Japanese industry and housing will not be rebuilt by U.S. plans. He cites 160,000 troops now with a peak around 600,000, disposal of munitions, and retention of the emperor for surrender terms while maintaining austerity.
