Rust costs US billions in corrosion losses
A URC study estimates rust costs the nation about seven and a half billion dollars yearly. Cables pipes and foundations suffer one billion in damage from wet earth, homes face one and a quarter billion, railroads 500 million, and farmers 300 million. Sacrificial anodes such as magnesium zinc or aluminum protect iron and steel, taking damage first and then being replaced. Rust preventive coatings are rising in industrial use.
