Bank tremor as seamen threat rocks British pound
The threat of a nationwide seamen strike crippled Britain's pound after the Bank of England stopped supporting sterling. The currency tumbled over 31 percent against the dollar in minutes, trading around $1.73, with the bank's withdrawal prompting a global central bank response. The strike could disrupt imports and exports, threaten Prime Minister Callaghan's Labor government, and follow a labor pact to curb inflation. The NUS vote pressured markets further as the FT Industrial Index slid. Seamen would strike at midnight Saturday if in port, suspending overtime at sea and abroad, delaying foreign port sailings.
