Soviet MIG25 lands in Japan as pilot seeks asylum
A Soviet MIG25 landed at Hakodate airport in northern Japan after a high speed flight from the Soviet Far East. The pilot, a Siberian air force lieutenant, sought political asylum in the United States. Police and officials discussed entry terms while the jet was covered for security reasons. The incident prompted radar warnings from the Japanese Air Self-Defense Forces and two Japanese Phantoms scrambled but did not intercept. The pilot was questioned and may be moved for further questioning. The foreign ministry noted the embassy request to see the aviator. Hakodate lies about 450 miles north of Tokyo on Hokkaido.
