Atoka Hosts Record-Setting 48 Hours Country Music Fest
Organizers report the two-day Atoka festival drew about 104000 attendees amid a 36 hour program that began Saturday afternoon. Traffic control was aided by nine Oklahoma Highway Patrol cars as crowds from Texas Oklahoma and Arkansas swelled the site 17 miles northwest of Atoka between Dallas and Tulsa. A minor shower paused the music for 20 minutes but bands resumed. Eight hundred security guards reported little trouble while a single injury occurred. The hospital treated 150 people for cuts sprains and heat illness with a helicopter standby for transport. Organizers plan a larger second festival next year possibly with a patriotic bicentennial theme and reseeding the 1500-acre site for better facilities.
