Coroner Ties Ferry Disaster to Drinking and Fatigue
New Orleans coroner Frank Minyard testified that ferry captain Egidio Auletta had a blood alcohol level near the legal limit and fatigue impaired his judgment during the collision with the tanker Frosta on the Mississippi River. Autopsy found no drugs. 68 bodies recovered, about 100 dead, 18 survived. Survivor Kenneth Beenel described the ferry’s fatal approach as a possible self-inflicted misjudgment as warning signals sounded from the tanker.
