Nixon proposes railroad retirement boosts amid veto count
Nixon argues financing would bankrupt the system in 13 years with benefits split between Social Security and the Railroad Retirement Trust Fund. He says retired railroad workers would gain about 28 dollars a month single and 47 for couples, with the plan using half the increases of a vetoed bill. Administration officials say the rises are half of those in the vetoed measure. White House spokesman Ron Ziegler notes this is Nixon's 18th veto and fourth this year.
