The railroad signalmen union announced tentative agreement on a 42 month contract that could test the Pay Board's wage guidelines. The terms are not yet announced but likely follow earlier rail settlements with about 42 percent increases over 42 months.
Showers and thunderstorms with cooler temperatures are forecast for Lawton and southwest Oklahoma through Wednesday. A 50 percent likelihood of precipitation is expected tonight and Wednesday. Gusty southeast winds 12 to 22 mph continue tonight. High Wednesday planned in the upper 50s. tonight’s low near 50s. High Monday reached 71 with a low of 62.
Washington reports most coal miners return to jobs after a 44 day strike as the Pay Board begins review of a three year labor accord between the coal industry and United Mine Workers seeking at least a 30 percent wage increase. Some holdouts wait for board decision and contract clarity.
The States Item reports Oklahoma, ranked No.2, set to play No.5 Auburn in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day. Oklahoma has not lost this season and will face top-ranked Nebraska on Nov. 25 for the Big Fight Conference title, while Auburn meets Alabama on Nov. 27 for the SEC crown. Oklahoma will accept the Sugar Bowl invitation Saturday. it would be their fourth Sugar Bowl appearance.
The Wage Board may grant retroactive raises for teachers held during the wage price freeze and decide merit pay funding. AF T president David Selden urged retroactive recognition, but the board narrowly rejected general retroactive pay while considering case by case requests. Grayson and Price Commission aim to speed price increase approvals to 72 hours, and other items include a record 12.1 billion U S balance of payments deficit and Nixon praising Phase 2. Morrison Industries executives criticize Phase 2 in New York remarks.
In a maiden U N speech Deputy Foreign Minister Chiao Kuan Hua urged U S withdrawal from Indochina and Taiwan, denouncing U S led “two Chinas” plan. He warned U S forces must leave Taiwan and the Taiwan Strait, vowing Chinese resolve to liberate Taiwan.
Mayor Don Whitaker announced plans to form a city ecology committee and named Walt Bell as acting city planning director after Joe Crain’s resignation. The council plans to study state and federal pollution laws as part of a suggested urban renewal project in Lawton.
Lawton Fort Sill United Way reports 86.5 percent of its $350000 goal has been raised. Sid Bryan lauds campaign, praising chairwoman Virginia Brewczynski as first female leader. CFC goals were reduced from 160000 to 115000, but totals were not updated. Combined funds include 128000 from CFC with 109708 for Lawton Fort Sill United Way, bringing overall to 302826.55.
The Supreme Court ruled 6 to 1 that states cannot deny welfare aid to new residents even without federal funds. Chief Justice Burger dissented.
Rudolf Abel, once the top Soviet spy in the United States, died of lung cancer at age 68 in Moscow. Active from 1948 to his 1957 arrest, he was exchanged in 1962 for U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers. Abel operated from a Brooklyn studio posing as a photographer and artist, gathering defense data with hidden film. He died Monday.
Cameron College officials voiced strong misgivings about an Oklahoma State Regents policy they say would abolish all two year associate degree programs. They oppose the plan’s potential to hinder regional accreditation and promise to fight. The policy would also bar non bachelor's degree goals and could trigger the college to establish its own governing board.
Leo Darrell Chandler serving a 50 year term for armed robbery hoped his painting Life Process would fetch $1 at an inmates art show at the University of Tulsa. The piece was stolen before bids.
