Ruling Recalls Mayor Court Fines and State Law
The ruling nullifies Ward's conviction and the state law enabling mayoral courts. It cites 1968 village revenue guidance where $23,000 of $53,000 came from mayoral fines. The decision questions mayor-led courts and affects 16 states, with White dissent arguing against extending 1927 limits. The Ohio Supreme Court previously upheld Ward, noting mayor salaries fixed by law.
