Britain drops curbs on Red China trade over U.S. objections
Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd announced Britain will scrap restrictions on about 200 export items to Red China, though he pledged to bar military or war making materials. The move ends a London–Washington dispute over trade with Peiping, with Britain claiming continued limits only on items that could enhance China’s war potential. The United States criticized the shift, and NATO allies varied in responses, with France among those wavering.
