In Nepal near Mt Annapurna an avalanche buried four Japanese climbers and a Sherpa guide as the 20 000 foot high ascent story ends in tragedy. The May 18 incident followed blizzards that halted the advance party just 150 feet from the 26500 foot summit. The group from the Japanese Alpine Club may be among the victims.
While repairing Rome's 1,500 year old Church of St Stephen the Rotund, workers opened a floor shaft and uncovered an underground pagan temple. Frescoes and statues suggest a Mithra shrine, one of several such Roman underground temples.
Greece disclosed that over 35 active and retired navy officers were involved in last week's attempted overthrow of the junta. The plan allegedly targeted Piraeus and Salonic a with ships, sought army support, and involved a group named Greek Antidictatorial Youth. Several leading officers were named.
