Flickering Light Aided Cooper Reentry In Capsule Book
Space officials recounted Gordon Cooper's perilous descent after 34 hours in orbit. A blinking green light signaled danger as automatic stabilization failed and Cooper manually piloted the Faith 7 capsule toward a rescue near 7 000 yards away. Engineers improvised an automatic pilot in a hangar and decided to fire retro-rockets manually to ensure a safe ocean splashdown.
