In Lawton Constitution’s May 2 1957 issue readers learn that Thur County settlers pursued their own county government. The lone town in Sand Hills county houses about 650 people with a two room courthouse for the treasurer clerk and the superintendent and judge.
Arthur Nebraska reports a 170 person town using baled hay for most structures including the Pilgrim Holiness Church. Hay forms bricklike walls with mud mortar, six year settling then stakes for roofing, outside stuccoed, a method born in 1913 when no railroad served the town.
In Knoxville Tennessee officials barred bare backed sun dresses and bare legs in the offices of the county and criminal court clerks. The bans followed two male employees objecting to the informal attire of some women workers.
