Jury May Reconsider Its Verdict
FT. BENNING Ga AP Lt William Calley Jr will plead for his life to the jury that convicted him of premeditated murder of Vietnamese civilians at My Lai. The sentencing phase begins today. The defense would not disclose what he will say. Antiwar sentiment and friends may prompt reconsideration to a lesser verdict such as unpremeditated murder or voluntary manslaughter. A single sentence will be returned. The six man panel needed five votes for life and all six for death. Judge Kennedy noted a prior case where jurors reversed after learning punishment limits. Latimer plans to present letters. Kennedy said he would see the proceedings at 1 p.m. EST.
